You know the type of game which people warn you against playing but you never listen? Well.. I was warned very strongly against Velvet Assassin, but being a sucker for games with heroines I went ahead and bought it anyway. You play as Violette, a British spy/assassin, who likes to sneak up on unsuspecting Nazis and filet them with a dagger. She also glows purple in the dark.
Unfortunately I’m really conflicted over how I feel about Velvet Assassin. It’s the type of game you will curse to high heaven whilst playing, but as soon as you take a break from it you’re itching to jump back in. It has it’s good and bad points, I just don’t know if the good points are strong enough to support it. The story is definitely a good point; inspired by a real-life secret agent, the levels are based around infiltrating numerous Nazi headquarters and taking out the guy at the top. At one point I even broke into a Gestapo prison to kill a fellow agent. As enjoyable as the story was, because of the time period, it also had some rather disturbing scenes. The particular level I’ve had vividly imprinted into my memory is set in a Gestapo prison in the Warshaw Ghetto. It’s pretty intense with the streets littered with murdered men, women and children. I’m even confronted by numerous hanged people, victims inside the prison. Later in the game, I’m trying to rescue a village set alight by Nazis. As I progress, I witness men lining people up against a wall and taking a flamethrower to them. I spent the majority of the game pretty shocked at what I was seeing during the actual narrative.
Who’d have thought sitting all day playing games would be so exhausting? I sure didn’t. And I don’t mean a normal gamerwhore session. I’m talking about the Eurogamer Expo 2009!! Nine hours of playing pre-release and new-release games and chatting up developers and reps. It was alot of fun. Let me explain..
It was the second day of the Leeds expo. We’d queued for maybe only half an hour. And we were let loose into a room full of Xbox and Wii pods and giant TVs with that other console attached to. We played games such as Avatar, AvP, Rabbids go Home, MAG and Blue Toad Murder Files. We also went to a Splash Damage talk on their new game Brink and made friends with some guys who work at Ubisoft over paninis. Unfortunately I had a full-on geek attack in front of them, but they seemed to like us anyway. Being a games programmer wannabe too, I talked to some guys from Ubisoft Reflections on getting placements in the industry and they were wonderful and lovely and helpful! It was a lovely and exciting experience!
Chantelle’s Top 5 Eurogamer Expo Games
1) Assassin’s Creed 2
Apparently the demo we were playing was a few months old, so our new Ubisoft friends didn’t think it was as awesome as what the final build is (yeah they’ve already been playing it). But after waiting for ages to play it I totally loved it! The free-running was very similar to AC1, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with that! The fighting followed the same principle, but the new weapons and disarming ideas were fantastic! I saw Ezio disarm a guard with an axe and then planted it straight in his balls. Awesome. Then I managed to break it. Ezio fell through a patio and kept falling, and falling.. and falling. Whoops. But I got to have a second play through because of it!
I also got shouted at for taking a picture of it. Tee-hee.
Well as it happens, I seem to be getting a lot of hits with people trying to research Left 4 Dead: Crash Course. So I thought I’d try and answer some of the questions. My source of intel are various bits and pieces I’ve read all over the internet and heard through the distant chatter of Xbox Live.
1) Initially I was told Crash Course was coming out the beginning of September by the Valve twitter. No such luck. According to multiple sources AND Valve twitter.. it’s the 29th September. Fingers crossed it doesn’t fall through! I don’t know if it’s official.. but word must have come from somewhere!
2) Yes. I do believe there will be achievements coming with it as well. Unfortunately I only know what one of them (possibly) is; attain a gold medal on survival mode. That means last 10 minutes against waves and waves of zombies. Yes.. I’ve had to tackle two Tanks, Hunters, Smokers and millions of common infected all at once in survival mode. I screamed and was thrown into a wall. Bad times. It’s not easy. I don’t think I’ve even made it to silver before. That beast better be worth some hardcore G.
3) And in other zombie-related news.. come October 27th Valve are releasing a Left 4 Dead 2 demo!! I’m really excited about this as it’s going to be demonstrating the new melee system! I may have squealed when I heard about it!!
And there we go. Three small bits of information I hope keep you going for the next week. Mmm.. zombie killing.
Chantelle’s jumping on the bandwagon. And loving it. Everywhere I’ve looked all I’ve seen is The Beatles: Rock Band. And who can blame us.. it’s an awesome game!! I’m not completely familiar with the Beatles unfortunately. I have a few of their albums and have mostly heard them blaring out of my brother’s room or in friends’ cars. But I do enjoy them! So much in fact that I got really excited over the release of The Beatles: Rock Band.
Come release day my brother was probably GAME’s only customer before 10 am. He played the game as soon as he got home, and completed the story mode not long after. I had to wait a little while however after embarking on a very long adventure on a quest for microphone stands! Eventually we purchased some awesome stands (complete with genius xbox controller clip) and began! Of course the wait was worth it. Not only was I able to play guitar whilst singing through my newly standing microphone, it’s an awesome game. Both due to the Beatles talent and good songs, and the new improvements to the actual game.
Sony. I’m not a fan. Not because I think the PlayStation 3 is a less superior machine, but because I’m not impressed with their range of games, anorexic controllers, and general manner. In an effort to win one over on Microsoft they’re delayed the release of Ghostbusters on the 360 in Europe, therefore making it exclusive to the PS3 (at least till October).
Well Sony.. HOW COULD YOU!? Do you have no soul?! I’m not going to go out and buy a PS3!
Whatever. That doesn’t matter. I foiled their evil plan. I am lucky enough to know someone who bought a copy from abroad, meaning I was able to get my own grubby little hands on it too! And wow.. I am so glad. Ghostbusters is a fantastic game. It’s not a long game.. I inadvertently hardcored my way through it and managed to complete it in about 7-8 hours. But I thoroughly enjoyed it! I’m really looking forward to a second play through!
It finally happened! I was chosen to be in the Mob on 1 vs 100!
I almost had a heart attack doing so.. but I was in the MOB!! Unfortunately, I panicked and got a question wrong.. the same question the One got wrong and missed out on winning a free arcade game (Zuma) and 400 Microsoft Points! Grr!! Which I wasn’t too pleased about.
I don’t know how I did it to be honest. I wasn’t even aware I had been chosen. It kicked me out of a game I was in with a friend, so I thought it was freaking out what with it being beta and everything. So as I signed back in, it came up and was all “Darth Telle: MOB”. I literally screamed!! There was my avatar jumping around in the Mob!! The questions for once were quite difficult as well! It was just a shame it was when I was in the Mob!!
The fateful question was “Which is a bird?” I can’t remember the other options, but the correct answer was Mao.. which I had an inclination it was. Goodness knows why.. but it was the only one I recognised. Unfortunately I was too unsure and chose another option which was completely wrong. I’m absolutely gutted!! But there’s hope yet! If I’ve managed to get in, there’s huge chance everyone else can!!
I shall be trying again next week.. holding out hope that I can be in once more.. but hopefully with better results!! Fingers crossed!!
